Following heavy rainfall, river embankments have started developing breaches at several places across the Sundarbans, while large stretches of agricultural land have been submerged under floodwater. Farmers cultivating green crops have suffered significant losses due to the damage.![]()

To assess the situation on the ground, West Bengal’s Sundarban Development Minister Shri Dipankar Jana undertook an inspection tour of the affected areas on Tuesday morning.![]()

The minister, accompanied by Gosaba MLA Shri Bikan Naskar and government officials, travelled by a government launch to inspect the embankments in Rangabelia, Jatirampur, Bali No. 1 and Bali No. 2 areas of Gosaba, in the South 24 Parganas district.![]()

Several areas of the deep Sundarbans have suffered extensive damage due to the heavy rains. The ingress of saline water has also caused widespread damage to standing crops, affecting the livelihoods of local farmers.![]()

During the visit, the minister assessed the condition of the river embankments and the extent of damage caused by the breaches. Discussions were also held regarding measures to prevent further erosion and strengthen the embankments.![]()

The inspection also highlighted the importance of implementing long-term plans for the construction and strengthening of river embankments, as well as coordinated efforts by the Central and West Bengal governments to protect the Sundarbans and its people.![]()

The Sundarbans, home to the world-famous mangrove ecosystem, is environmentally and strategically important. Both the Government of India and the West Bengal Government have reiterated their commitment to protecting this fragile region.![]()
